Somerset CBD update

Steady progress has been made in the upgrades to the Somerset CBD.

Upgrades have been made to the Civic Square plaza area with feature seating, additional parking and tree planting in Elizabeth and Wragg Street works completed earlier this year.

Work has continued on the next stages of the project, with more to look forward to next year.

The electrical underground changeover was recently completed and new electrical and seating lights were completed in the Plaza.

The next steps will be to remove the overhead infrastructure, which Council are waiting on the time confirmation from TasNetworks.

New rubbish bins are also on order and are expected to be in before Christmas, while contracts have been awarded to install a drinking fountain and for the painting of the pedestrian walkway.

A concept is also being developed to include artwork in the civic square.

There will be three stages to artwork; a mural on butchers wall, panels and audio visual work.

The concept is currently being developed by local consultant Jen Archer, who worked on the successful photo murals at Wynyard Woolworthss.

Jen is working with local artists and residents to gather ideas and once a concept is developed and reviewed by Council, a public consultation process will be held to develop the final design with local artists to be given the opportunity to provide proposals for the design.

Construction of the Somerset Plaza Canopy and windbreak walls will be among the highlights of the upgrades in the new year.

A tender has not yet been accepted for the canopy, with architects making couple of small changes to the canopy detail, while Council investigates an alternative construction methodology.
