Council wins Worksafe award

25 October 2018

Waratah-Wynyard Council has been recognised as an innovator in the area of worker rehabilitation and return to work strategies at the 2018 WorkSafe Tasmania Awards.

The prestigious Workplace Health and Safety Awards recognise excellence across all industry sectors, with Waratah-Wynyard Council’s Josh Fraser taking out the category for an Individual’s Contribution to Worker Rehabilitation and Return to Work.

The innovative tools and strategies Mr Fraser developed have, for the first time in over 12 years, seen the Council free of any ongoing workers compensation claims and all workers previously on long-term medical restrictions cleared for full duties.

The key strategy recognised in Fraser’s win was the development of the Injured Worker Tool.

This tool matches workplace tasks against medical restrictions and identifies meaningful duties a worker is able to perform. A Return to Work plan is then developed in consultation with medical professionals.

With the new tools in place, Fraser said the council had been able to reduce the accumulative lost time hours from injuries by 98.8% in the last financial year.

Fraser said the award recognised the Council’s as a leader in proactively managing workplace injuries.

“Ideally we would like to have a workplace without injuries, but realistically that’s not going to happen, so it’s about how we respond and manage a workers Return to Work journey. “

“There is conclusive evidence to suggest workers are better off in the workplace while rehabilitating rather than being at home.

Statistics show that returning to work early after an injury or illness helps an individual recover and reduces the risk of long-term disability, social isolation and stress.”
